No liners. I use pine in 6 of my boxes and crystals in the other 2 (Juli is fussy and will only use a box with crystals--nothing else worked for her.) I scoop every other day, and I find I don't have to CHANGE the boxes more than once a month.

The smell factor for me usually is due to the type of litter that I use. The cats now use clumping FreshStep and love it (I love it, too, lol-I don't have to listen to DH bitching about any smell).
I also clean the litter daily.
Beachbum I too clean the litter box out daily. But I don't use that Fresh Step Litter. That stuff is kind of pricey. I use the litter that Petsmart sells. And/or PetCo sells. Whichever store has a deal going at the time. Or whatever store I am closest too at the time.
I sort of stock pile on Box's or 40lb jugs of litter. So I don't run out, lol. But Both brands are great. Same clumping action as the
Fresh Step advertizes and for a lot less money. And NO smell at all.
