My aunt and uncle were the victims of a home invasion many years ago. The thieves broke in while they slept in their beds. My aunt remembers waking up and seeing someone standing at her door, and she was TERRIFIED. I don't think she ever got over it. They got a HUGE doberman shortly after that.

All the thieves stole were drugs. Every pill in the house. Vitamins, Tylenol, the whole shabang.

My aunt and uncle live in terror now.

Having never been the victim of a crime like that, I can't comment, but I will say that having NEVER been the victim of a crime like that I DO NOT live in fear that it might happen. I might get cancer. I might get hit by a bus. A lot of things MIGHT happen, and it's crazy to act like it will. I will not let that kind of life energy get sucked out of me. Worry about shit WHEN it happens, and not a moment before. Use common sense and common safety precautions in the meantime, but don't live in fear.

MHO of course.

Which are completely and utterly useless in keeping guns out of the hands of criminals. The huge surge in handgun violence in major urban areas attests to that. Of course why should that come as a surprise to anyone? Criminals by definition are people who don't care about laws. Someone intent on committing a crime like murder or armed robbery won't mind committing a little extra crime like illegally buying a gun in the process.

No that's not true. That myth came about as a result of the "Kellerman study", published in the New England Journal Of Medicine in the 80's. The methodology in that study was flawed and hasn't stood up to peer reviewed scrutiny. Yet it's still uncritically accepted as gospel truth in many circles
