I've been using Advantage flea and tick control on my dog. The only place I can find it is from the vet. Can't remember the exact price, but it is pricey. Another problem with getting it from the vet is the vet hours. I'm at work during the day, during the week-the same hours as the vet's office. I see flea and tick stuff at stores that are used the same way as Advantage-usually Hart brand. Are there any brands that can be store bought that are as good as Advantage? I hate paying a high price for something if I can get a comparable brand for cheaper.
Dog, I think you can get some of these things on-line.
About get stuff on-line: I know it's the way things are done now, but I'm not a fan of getting stuff on-line. I like to see what I'm getting before I buy it, especially if I need to read instructions on the packaging.
Absolutely do NOT use those Hartz and similar brand flea and tick products. They aren't made with the same kind of chemicals as Advantage and Frontline are and they have been known to be at best a useless waste of money and at worst destructive and deadly:

Hartz Kills
Hartz Victims
The good stuff is only available through prescription from vets and the horrible cheap crap is easy to get at warehouse pet stores like Petsmart. In the case of medicines, sometimes the cheaper deal is a cheaper deal, and the products you get is of very poor quality.
We switched from Frontline to the Comfortis pill, since drops are on their way out. Unfortunately, Comfortis offers no protection against ticks, but we don't have too many ticks where we're living now so it's fine. Frankly, I'd like to avoid giving my pups any chemicals at all, but I've found that the natural alternatives aren't very effective.
The only option you have for convenience is getting your Advantage through websites like 1-800-Pet-Meds or similar. We get our Comfortis and Heartgard through the Drs. Foster & Smith website, it's been very easy. All they needed was for my vet to fax them the prescription, which was easily taken care of with a phone call, and now we get what we need in the mail.
Whatever you decide, please don't put your dog in danger by using the junk from Hartz, Seargent, Sentinel and those other cheap brands.
I use Confortis, a flea pill. It works great!
Thanks for the info Anastasia and PG. I was at Walmart and debating whether to try the Hartz on my dog, and was wondering if it was any good. Now I know not to. Getting it on-line seems like a bit of a pain-having to get the vet to fax them first before mailing it to you. It would be more convenient if I left work an hour early and picked the Advantage at the vet's on the way home (never heard of Comfortis).
Your vet can probably mail them to you.
Sorry, I was in a hurry, and couldn't elaborate. The Confortis pill is a poison, so dosage, dosage strength, size of the dog -- it all matters. ALSO if your dog has been taking another medication commonly found in both heartworm pills and mange treatments, it's important to ensure that other medication is either out of the system (in the case of mange meds) or a small enough dosage (in the case of heartworm pills). For safety's sake, I give my dog her heartworm meds on the first of the month, and Confortis on the 15th of the month. She's had no problems, not even nausea at the time she takes it (a common symptom), and the fleas are just GONE!
It's Comfortis, with an "m," so you'll know what to google for more information, but here's the official site:

We've been using it for a year since the vet recommended it because the topical drops are supposedly going away at some point.
But getting the vet to fax the online company was absolutely no problem at all, they do it all the time so it's routine.
