Here's the latest computer problem I'm having. When I open Internet Explorer, it opens twice-there are two home pages up. I don't double click or anything like that. The second one doesn't appear at exactly the same time as the first-maybe a 30 second difference. It doesn't seem to cause any problems when going to websites from IE, but it's a nuisance to have two home pages up at the same time. Has anyone experienced anything like this and know of a solution?
See if your computer is automatically loading IE -- if you're using Windows, cick the start button, then "All Programs", then go to "Startup". If it's there, AND you are clicking on IE regularly, that might be what's happening -- either stop clicking on IE and let this one load, or get rid of this one (just right click and delete it from "Startup" -- and at the same time, get rid of any other resources hogs you don't care to open automatically!).
PG-I did what you suggested, All Programs>Startup, but it didn't show Internet Explorer when I had two home pages up. I did it a few times and it just showed the same three items: OpenOffice, HP Digital Monitoring, HP Image Zone. When I went into IE this morning, a total of five homepages popped up while I was on a site-not at the same time, but about a minute apart. That was freaky. When I go into IE, I click the button once, so I don't know how it keeps popping up.

It sounds to me like you may have gotten a nuisence virus.
Do you have any kind of virus protection software? If so, run a scan. And see what comes up.
If that does not help, you might want to try and buy this product
I swear by it

It is very easy to use too.

with your computer. I run with I.E all the time and I never had this happen to me. So imho, That is why I think it might be a virus. I could be wrong, but you never know.
Do you have a weather program installed Dog? Like Weather Bug? Multiple Internet Explorer windows can mean you have some spyware/malware as well. There's a great free program called "MalwareBytes", you can download a free version of it and do a scan. Not saying that's it, but it's worth a shot. Plus, doing a scan is never a bad idea!
You can download it here:

Well as they say Melsie GMTA=Great Minds Think Alike
Imho of course I think Webroot is the best.

But either /Or the choice is there

Thanks for the suggestions. I did a virus scan and ran Malwarebytes. It didn't take care of the spcific problem, but it was a good idea to clean out any crap on the computer
But I found a pattern to the problem. One of the first things I check out when on line is Hotmail. When I go into Hotmail, another home page pops up. How wierd is that? If I'm on the computer for a while, I'll check Hotmail regularily. Anytime I check it, another home page appears. How do I clean up Hotmail? Shouldn't the virus scan and anti-malware taken care of that?
Try turning on your pop-up blocker. It's in the tools menu.

Mark-I turned on the pop-up blocker, but it didn't solve the problem. Thanks anyway for the idea.
Hmm. How do you get to hotmail? Is it just a link in your favorites or an icon on your desktop?
Also, when you say opens another homepage, what exactly do you mean? Does it open another tab in your browser or does it open a whole other window?
Dog, something to check too.. in Internet Explorer, go to Tools, Internet Options and then Advanced and uncheck "Use Third-Party browser extensions (requires restart)". There may be some extension causing it.
If you have IE 7 or 8, you can also open it without any addons loaded, as one of them maybe causing a problem. To open without addons, go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools.

The way I get to my hotmail is there's a link on the IE homepage to Hotmail.
When I click on Hotmail, another window appears, but it's behind the first homepage. When I minimize the first homepage or exit out of it, the second homepage shows, just like opening more than one website and having them on top of each other. The only difference is that there is no tab in the taskbar saying there's another homepage open.

Melsie433-I tried that. Unfortunately, that didn't do the trick either.
This is getting as hard to solve as plugging the oil leak in the Gulf. I did a disk defrag and disk cleanup, turned the computer on and off, and nothing changed. Luckily. it doesn't seem to affect accessing websites, but who know for sure what's going on with it.
I have that problem with my computer and I know it's a faulty mouse, but that doesn't seem to be your problem (it doesn't seem to be a case of multi-clicks on the mouse). Still, I'll mention it just in case. (I solve the problem by right-clicking and choosing Open from the menu).

Thanks for the tip, but that didn't work either. It's starting to aggravate me, mostly because I don't know what caused it and I don't know how to fix it. There are times where I want to use a hammer to fix computer problems, and this is getting close to that time. LOL
Dog,
Is it only when you click the link to check your hotmail that you notice the extra pages? If so, instead of clicking that link, type in the address bar
http://www.hotmail.com and see what happens. The link on your bar is most likely using an ahref with a target="_blank" built in to the link which, in layman's terms means "make a new window pop up and load the link there" which would effectively leave your original home page behind the new hotmail page.
Arkved-your suggestion worked. Thanks. It's too bad I don't know how to change the stuff you mentioned as being the cause.
is the short cut you click to go to hotmail in your short cut list? or is it on a tool bar on the top? like an actual button? it might just be the short cut that you saved got saved with the target="_blank" try typing in
http://www.hotmail.com and get to the page you want to book mark. once there, try book marking it again, then close out, open IE and click the new short cut. it should just load inside your current browser and not cause a new pop up screen. worst case, just stick to typing it in the bar, its a short URL
Glad i could help.

There's a button on the toolbar that says Hotmail that I used to click to go to hotmail. Alao, when I'm in a website, there's another button on the toolbar that's marked Read Mail that also goes to my hotmail. That button also creates a second home page.
ok, yeah, those button are unfortunately set to use that target="_blank" and they just launch new windows instead of using the current window. there is probably a way to modify it, but without being able to sit down in front of it, its hard to say. At least you have a work around for it now though

OK I had to bump this thread to ask a question.
I recently upgraded my browser from I.E 8 to I.E 9
So far everything has been going great. But now all of a sudden I get this message on the bottom of my screen that reads this......
.................................
"Speed up Browsing by disabling add-ons"
and there is two boxes to choose from
"Choose add-ons" or "ask me later" and a box to X out of it but If I click on that, it just comes back later and asks again?
My REAL question is WTF is an " add-on"?????????
Do I need them? Or what? But ITMT the screen stays there and is very annoying. But I don't know what to do??
I am so confused.. Please help me FOAK of computers.
Thanks
