you are so right about the changes over the years..ppl do tend to overreact these days
Blame zero tolerance, lawyers, and especially over-protective baby boomers. It amazes me how the United States has declined from the world empire to what it is today.
The flip side of this is that in 1957, Johnny would have raped Susie because she was wearing a short dress, and the jury would have found him not guilty due to her slutty 'asking for it'. In '57, an unqualified Johnny would apply for a job up against a qualified Abdul and Susie, and hands down would get it, because a white man is better than an immigrant or a woman any day of the week. In 1957, Johnny would beat up Mark for thinking he was gay, and gay bash him to death and the town would look the other way.
Sometimes things need to change and it's not a bad thing that they did.

Thank you Jo!
You mirrored my thoughts exactly.

So true.. but does that mean that intolerance of everything else has to exist, just because Abdul didn't get a job?
There has to be happy medium of events in this world. And instead of reaching it. It went all the way to the other side of the spectrum of absolute "zero tolerance" And IMHO that is absurd.
In 2010 the answer to everything is drugs or therapy.
And zero tolerance in the schools, is so much so, that
If a kid even looks cross-eyed at a teacher they get suspended for a week.
Why we cannot reach a happy medium in this country is beyond me.
We cannot reach a happy medium, because too many people are stuck in black-and-white thinking. If children were raised to come to creative solutions to problems, we would not be where we are now.
Jo, your response to this was brilliant!
I felt some of the scenarios were a bit simplistic and exaggerated, personally.
Jen M.
You lose some things and gain some things. I think this would have been a better example if they added in another year before 2001. That would have shown more of a happy medium. SInce 9/11 we have tended to totally overreact to nearly everything, and, at the same time, we have the "me" generation raising the "entitled" generation.
As a lesbian feminist socialist (have I left anything out?) I will take the social progress, but on occasion, I do resent the sneaky way other things have coat-tailed onto it.
You just about have to have a zero tolerance policy for drugs and weapons. If you leave it up to subjective rules, you're just asking for unequal treatment. There's enough prejudice people out there that I'm sure some teachers would have a different standard for black kids than white kids.
And seriously, show me one instance of a kid getting suspended for looking at a teacher cross-eyed. That statement is as absurd as the argument it's trying to make.

Well Mark, duh of course I was exaggerating.
I Know that a cross-eyed look won't get a kid suspended.
But, some ridiculous things have had kids getting into trouble today that never would have even made a teacher blink back in the late 50's

Come on Rosary beads? How dumb is that!
But this is times we live in.
And it makes me sick to my stomach, and I am not even Catholic
http://jonathanturley.org/2009/12/27/pep...to-school/
And lets not forget this little ditty. Although it happened last year.
It is still stupid as all hell.
Yea maybe we should nick name this kid Peppermint Patty, lol
How dumb is this sh*t
My point is the stupidity of zero tolerance has gone above and beyond guns and drugs. And I really think imho of course that people need to take a few steps back and look at themselves
and their history. I grew up just fine with guns & drugs & peppermint oil, lol.
I don't see the need for Zero Tolerance.
A 50/50 plan yes.
A Three strike rule YES
But ZERO tolerance, as in getting in trouble one time for Rosary beads and/or peppermint oil.. is insane. And that is the argument I was trying to make.
ITA some of the Johnny stuff on this original post was not meant to be totally serious. It was sort of on the humorous side.
But, sadly it IS very TRUE. So I figured it was safe to post it here.
ITA about the year 2001.. All of this crap started after 911. And all the fear mongering after that has
gone too far IMHO of course.
Just because you felt it was safe to post here does not mean that other people can not critically analyze the content.
People are free to disagree with ANY article or material as long as they re not being abusive towards you ( or any poster).
It was an overly simplistic article that some of us disliked.

That is cool, you don't have to like it. I was just explaining that I did not know where to put it.. Here, or in the humor thread.
That is all, no offense meant

I know everyone had free will to like or not to like anything they want.
I never claimed I was being abused either, lol
I save that honor for my family

The rosary bead thing is happening with another student here where I live. What isn't being said is that rosary beads are now used as a gang symbol! So these little gang-bangers are wearing their rosaries and getting the ACLU to defend them when they're really not about saying the rosary at all...
I've heard that too, CNK, but the school is walking a very fine line in making that determination and automatically taking action against a kid for wearing/carrying one. It's a touchy subject.
TW, I will point out that peppermint oil--especially the essential oil--is a volatile oil. It can burn skin and eyes upon contact. Also, for people with chemical sensitivities, things like that can cause an issue. I have a friend who has MCS. One wrong exposure could kill him.
Jus' sayin'.
Jen M.
Zero tolerance is zero intelligence. There is a huge difference between a kid bringing in a shotgun and firing away and a kid having a pocket-knife. I've even heard of students being arrested for having a shotgun in their car or truck. In central PA it's actually pretty common for this to be done, especially during deer season.

WOW Thanks for the lesson. I had no idea Peppermint oil was so
harmful. I thought it was just a base to make candy with.
Who knew? Thanks for the info Jen

It's VERY strong.
It IS used in candy making, but it's either used in very small quantities or it's mixed down. The essential oil is a pure form.

Yes Deer hunting is very Popular in PA as well as in OH.
But more so in PA.
OT: btw, hubby still travels your way all the time

As somebody who was teased a lot in my younger years I don't mind the changes in tolerance. I also agree with Jo's comments, and those of others. The 1950's were only 'the good old days' if you were a white male.
