OK I know zero about beer. We're having this big party. I'm planning on buying 2 cases of beer. The only beer J. drinks is expensive foreign stuff. I don't want to be seen as ridiculously cheap but I also don't want to shell out over $1/bottle which is what so many beers seem to be now.
Any suggestions for a good, middle of the road party beer? I'm coming at this from complete ignorance.
My two personal favorite "middle of the road" beers are Amstel Light and Molson Canadian. They're a little pricier than Bud Light, etc., but definitely cheaper than other imports and can readily be found at any store that sells beer. Sam Adams is another decent party choice.
V.
I'm a cheapskate. Bud Light for parties and Milwaukee Something for us the rest of the time.
I like Amstel Light for a light beer. I went to a Vietnamese market and they were selling 12 packs for $11, somehow the cashier charged me $8.99!(I'm buying for a party)
I hate all forms of Budweiser, do like Molson, though, and Sam Adams. It's good to have a variety of styles of beer for everyone.
Corona is good but I have to ask; why are you paying for the beer when you've already been fucked over by people who cancelled on you? Is anybody putting money into this event other than you?
Honestly, go with the cheap stuff, especially if you're the one paying. In fact, why have it at all? I know some people will be surprised since I'm definitely a drinker, but personally I think alcohol at an event is more trouble than it's worth. It brings up the people who can't handle their liquor, liability if someone drives drunk and gets in an accident, and the expense of having it.
What amazes me is how people fully expect booze at a party and get angry when there isn't any. When my grandparents got married they didn't have alcohol because my grandfather didn't believe in drinking. It was amazing how so many people complained behind their backs about it.
Well My 4 Fav beers are Miller, Miller Lite, Coors, and Coors Lite.
And ITA Go with whatever you can afford.
I am sure people won't care what brand you serve, just as long as there is beer period, they will be HAPPY

Have fun and STAY SAFE!
All of our parties are BYOB.
All of the parties are BYOBOOZE and the host supplies a small assortment of NON- alcoholic drinks.
The liability if you serve booze can ruin your life.
Even then I'd caution you that if you allowed the alcohol to be consumed on the property you could still be held liable since you are the host. It's an extremely rare situation but still something you should consider. What's sad is that this is even possible.
Great suggestions, thanks, everybody!
My sister helped me recruit some people to take the places of those who backed out - as of now I have 2 tickets unpaid and I HOPE to get paid still for one of them...
We expect that some decent people will BYOB but I am not asking anyone to bring anything so it's really up to them. But the well-raised/mannered folks we know will show up with something in hand.
For the 26 of us I plan 8 bottles of wine (left overs will never go to waste!) and 1.5 cases of beer. There are 6 kids so it's just 20 adults.
Sam Adams and Amstel Light sound like good ideas - Corona is also another good one - especially since it's an outside, summer deal. We can't serve Bud or Miller or Coors. I mean, we could, but we won't be serving Barefoot or Taylor wine or some other crummy brand so I just can't do that to the beer drinkers.
I think Sam Adams is about as low end as I will go beer wise. I prefer craft brews and imports. If bud, miller, corona, etc are served at a party, i'll just have soda or water. I'm a beer snob though, rofl.
I usually do something similar to you CNK - I tell people that if they are picky then they can BYOB, but that I will have some (relatively cheap - although I don't advertise that fact!) beers, wine, and non-alcoholic drinks. I never have enough for everyone to get tipsy, the point is that if someone forgets to bring something or doesn't get the chance to pick it up then there are options available for my guests. It's probably about one drink per person, on average. Inevitably all the drinks get shared around so some of mine is consumed and at the end I have other options in my fridge, which works out well because I like trying different beers so it's nice to have variety.
I'm leaning toward the Sam Adams now. It sounds like a good baseline.
Well to be honest about it, IMHO Beer & wine both suck. If you really want to get a party going provide some Makers Mark, Or BACARDI
Now thats a Party!
But I know that is very pricey for a large group. So, beer & wine will have to do. Have fun at your party

I don't buy crap beer for friends. If it were me, I would buy a case of a moderately priced decent domestic beer (Yuengling, Rolling Rock, Shiner, Sam Adams) and a case of moderately priced imported beer (Beck's or Dos Equis, for example).
But I don't know these people you are inviting. If they're blue collar, then maybe they like crap beer like Budweiser.
This is interesting because if we go anywhere for a party, DH brings a few beers and I bring a bottle of wine. This is for two reasons;
1) they might not have a beer/wine that we like so if we bring our own, we know we'll have something enjoyable. Although, DH isn't really all that picky when it comes to beer.
2) We can't be accused of coming in and drinking all their booze. LOL - not that we would, but you know what I mean.
And of course, if there is any left over, we just leave it for our host/hostess.
A bit O.T. but we had a No Kidding get together here a few years back and one couple brought a pie. The next day the husband called and asked if there was any pie leftover. There was. He came by later that afternoon and picked up the leftover pie. Can you believe that? How cheap is that?
Picking up leftover pie? That's just pathetic.
Must've been some good pie.
I don't know how much beer you planned on supplying, but when I have people whose beer preferences are unknown, I usually buy several six-packs of different kinds. My default "low-end" beer is AB's AmberBock. I just don't like to drink beer that looks like piss.
We're getting 2 cases.
NKB - that's just fucked up. My sister once took back beer she had brought when her family stayed with us for a weekend at J's camp. I found it pretty shocking.
I wouldn't associate beer preference with where someone works and I generally don't appreciate classist statements.
