Hi Gang
Well we went and finally did it.
We got ourselves a new puppy to add to our happy family.
Meet Peanut.. Yep that is his name he is 9 weeks old
So that makes his birthday to be March 27th
Give or take a few days. But that is an easy # to remember cause Bob's Birthday is Jan 27th, lol.
And Peanut still needs another round of shots. But he is very healthy and bright eyed and very smart & cute if I do say so myself.
His name was given to him long before we would ever name him. But the funny thing about it is Bob always wanted a pet by the name of Peanut.
And now we finally got one, lol.
He is very lovable. He is a Beagle Mix. So no he won't be a BIG dog.
But he will be a handful for sure.
I am stocked up with puppy chow, and treats and I signed up for Obedience classes with him starting in June 6th. So that in total with his adoption fee I have laid out some serious money.
The only thing I did not get him yet was a bed.
But I figured he is small enough he can sleep in his new crate that has a nice soft pad for now.
And I need to get him a name tag for his new collar
Petsmart was out of the ones I wanted, lol.
Anyway, I found him on Petfinder.com
He was part of a litter that was going to be euthanized
at some shelter in Pike County Ohio which is close to Cincinnati Ohio. He was rescued along with others by a program called The Animal Rescue Center in Eastlake Ohio.
And when we got him today he was in a cage with his sister Pretzel who looks just like Peanut. Only she was a shade lighter in color in the face.
Good news is Pretzel was adopted today too. So now they both have good homes to be in.
This will be a serious undertaking for me. Cause I can see already that Peanut wants to dig.
So, I will have to break him of that habit ASAP.
But right now he is sleeping in his crate and Boots is laying by the cage watching over him, lol.
I told Boots to be a good boy and look after his baby brother, lol. But we shall see.

When we first got him home I thought Boots would have a fit and hiss and snarl. But amazing enough he did neither. Only when Peanut got after one of Boots toys did Boots take offense and he got irritated enough to hiss and try to take a swipe at him.
But now that I got Peanut settled in with his own toys and treats and food & water, that Boots seems to be Ok with him, so far.

And the good news is Peanut is already Housebroken
He knows to whine at the door if he needs to go out.
Or he will whine in his cage and I will take him out.
Either or, I was told he is housebroken.
Yes I am smart enough to know there will still be accidents. But, for the most part the hard part of it has been taken care of.
When we had him at the store looking for Food shampoo and all the stuff a dog needs. A big dog came around him and Peanut started to bark and snarl at the big dog. I thought that was so funny. He seems to be a fearless little squirt. But for now he is my little squirt, and he is just too adorable for words.
So I now present Peanut
LOL

Update: I wrote this out Yesterday for my E mail pals. I did not get a chance to post this till today 5-22-10
Since then, Boots has not been a happy camper. He has hissed on Peanut, and tried several times to swipe at him, missing him every time. And Peanut is not happy sleeping in his crate.
Right now he is in hubby's bed. out cold, lol.
I have been walking him every 2 hours. I was told he was housebroken, but he is not.
So needless to say their has been several accidents within the past 24 hours. And yours truly is functioning on 4 hours of sleep, lol.
But I did find him his name tag, and I will stick it out.
And Boots will have to learn to live with him too.
I cannot give up this face! LOL
He's so cute! Congrats!
Why was he going to be put down??
I'm so glad you rescued him!
I'm sure he and Boots will be great friends Smile
Hooray for rescuing a dog!

Hooray for rescuing a dog!

Thanks Dana, The place where he was born. They were going to destory the whole litter. But the Animal Rescue place saved the whole litter from that disaster TG! That was only 9 short weeks ago. You know how evil PEOPLE can be Sad
Yes I am happy we saved him too. Although he along with the litter was saved by a no kill shelter, I am still happy he is with us despite his continues whines, lol.Smile
He's very cute, congrats! Adjustments usually take 2 weeks, so you'll have to wait that long for Boots to get used to him and stop snarling and hissing, and it might take a week or two for him to get adjusted to being housebroken in a new place. He's probably so confused and overwhelmed, and he would have only been recently housebroken if he was, that it makes sense that he might need to adjust before remembering.

The key is to make sure that you keep a very close eye on him for the next couple weeks, to make sure that he goes outside and is rewarded for it, and that you monitor the time that he and Boots spend together so that they don't end up causing each other grief before they can get adjusted.

Does Boots like treats? Give him some when he goes close to Peanut, and if Peanut wants treats as well then give them first to Boots (because he's 'top dog') and then to Peanut. If you teach Peanut to sit, then tell him to sit, give Boots a treat, and then give him one. That way everybody has good feelings about each other. You don't want Peanut to have too many treats, but he's a growing puppy and you only need to reinforce with treats a lot at first.

Congrats on finding such a cutie, and on saving a puppy's life! There's no better feeling Smile
Adorable!
What a cutie! I'm glad you saved him. :-)

Good luck with the adaptation. I hope all goes well!
