Water Lily, I remember when "Kids" came out. It was considered very shocking and scandalous. Harmony Korine (the director) basically shot the whole thing at a friend's apartment over the weekend. I knew someone who was supposed to be in it, but he didn't return the call in time to find out where the shoot was. Oh well...his loss!

DH and I watched an oldie, "Patti Rocks" last night. It's from the 1980s and was very low-budget. Basically these 2 buddies are driving to see the woman that the one guy (the jerky guy) knocked up. They shoot the shit the whole way there, talking about pussy, women, relationships, etc. Once they get to the woman's apartment, though, everything changes. The tough-talking guy is kind of a pushover, Patti herself is a tough chick, and his friend ends up bonding with Patti.

ETA: It reminded me of "Sideways" without the wine.
Got "Charms for the Easy Life" from Netflix.
I had read it for bookclub, so was interested in the movie.

Mimi Rogers and Gena Rawlings (sp?) were the two big names. It was cracking me up that the guy who plays Mike from Red Green Show was in this movie too. Set in the 1940's and Southern. Gena is a midwife/herbalist.

Parts of it was pretty close to the book, but as per usual there were a couple changes. Unfortunately, one change was the grandmother's reunion with her husband and some of the set up from that. And I think the end was different.
Overall, it was good and the changes not bad enough to make me scream at the tv.
OK I got this VHS Tape for $3 well over a year ago. Called
"The Passion of The Christ"
Yea this is the one Good old Mel Gibson did.
So I finally watched it today, to find out what the hub bub was all about.

I have to admit it did get very graphic in the way of blood & gore.
But as for a movie review itself?
I thought the only good thing about it was the music.
It was tough not to sleep through it, as you had to read the subtitles.
And with very little plot line, I was amazed I did not doze off.

I would not recommed this movie for the faint of heart
Or for any religious zellets either. Worms

I saw it in the theater just to see what the fuss was about and I was not too impressed either. I seriously don't get why people thought it was so good.

And the excessive blood and guts made it hard to watch. It was not realistic blood and guts either, but horror-movie-style.

BTW, it's spelled "zealots", for future reference. Big Grin

LOL Thanks CFS Smile Hey If you recall I was the one asking for a spell check feature, lol ( just kidding MODS Smile I Know I can't have everything)
But FYI It came up on google spelled that way? So, Who knew? lol
But thanks CFS for the correction.

As for your comment about Passion..... ITA
But I think the reason the movie got the flack it did was due to the blood.
I don't think people raved about how good the movie was? If I recall at least in our bible belt area, the movie was shunned and ripped a new one for even being on the big screen period!
So with that in mind..It brought more people to see it (in our area) just cause they too had to know what the big deal was all about. Nothing like free publicity, lol
But NOW I too know! That It was just too gory of a film IMO.
Fake or no Fake blood, imo, it was not neccesssary to be that graphic with a topic that has been seen a dozen times or more in other movies.
Do you recall the kind of whips they used? OMG That was too gross Sad.
But I guess Mel & Hollywood had to take it to the next level! Sad
Netflix came on Saturday. DH got Pork Chop Hill with Gregory Peck this weekend. Oh, joy another war movie. Glad we get two per shot.
I got the first half of Neverwhere. A BBC production of Neil Gaiman's book. It was a 6 part mini-series so I got through the first part. (Neil wrote the story for the movie of Stardust, which DH and I both liked.) DH wasn't really into it, and it wasn't good to start and watch while we were starting supper. Neverwhere is very British and reminded me a bit of Doctor Who. Very Urban fantasy as oppose to standard fantasy or straight sci-fi. Oh, and one of the characters is played by the gentleman who was Jim on the Vicor of Dibly series. That was fun. Kind of cool if you liked Stardust or other stuff by Neil. (Or even if you are into Doctor Who.)

I liked this movie. Irving was a master fraudster lying to everyone including himself. He couldn't keep up with his lies and eventually got caught.

I'm not a huge Richard Gere fan but he pulled off the role of Irving quite convincingly. I had no idea there was a connection between Howard Huges, Clifford Irving and President Nixon.
I watched "Yentl" yesterday, which I'd never seen. I know this is terrible, but I just kept saying to myself, "Wow. They could really have taken this in a whole 'nother direction and made it like a lesbian soft-core pron film!"
Also watched "Kingpin" which I'd never seen. It's a comedy about bowling, starring Woody Harrelson and Bill Murray. I laughed in spite of myself.
Through Netflix, I watched The Magdalene Sisters. It was an excellent film though definitely not recommended if you are interested in seeing a lighthearted movie.

It chronicles several girls who for various reasons, wound up being sent to the Magdalene Sisters' convent in Ireland. The girls became virtual slaves, forced to work in the sisters' laundry and prevented from leaving.

"The Langoliers" last night. Always good fun!
Water Lily, the first time I saw it The Magdalene Sisters, I lost it and started crying at the end when the wrap-up text mentioned that the last Megdalene house was closed in 1998. Just thinking about how many women have gone through that really got to me.
Saw the animated Grave of Fireflies. Not the normal fantasy/sci-fi anima. Tells about a boy (about 11-12?) who becomes in charge of his little sister after some of the bombings in Japan during WW2 destroy his town and kill his mother. Mostly interesting, though some spots were too long.

We saw The Magdalene Sisters about a year ago. I think I had seen a thing on 60 Minutes about it a while back and then saw the movie. DH watched and made a comment that he was really uncomfortable in a couple of the scenes and he couldn't have imagined living through it. Nevermind the outrage of why most of the girls were there in the first place.
DH and I had a movie day yesterday. We went to see "Jumper" at the second run theater. It's got Hayden Christianson, Rachel Bilson, and Samuel L. Jackson in it. It was moderately entertaining and had an interesting premise, but they could have done a lot more with it.

We also went to see "Forgetting Sarah Marshall". Very funny movie! We laughed out loud dozens of times.

We also rented "Death at a Funeral" and "Juno". Both were very funny.

Vanessa
We watched "Over the Hedge" yes- it's CGI, but it's about suburban sprawl and the effect on animals, it was a typical kid's CGI movie but still pretty cute in that talking animal sort of way.

We also watched Blood Diamond and I can absolutely see why it was nominated for so many awards. I admit I've liked Leonardo DiCaprio since he was on Growing Pains (remember that?! Wink but his acting in this movie was really awesome. No, astounding. Sort of like when I saw him in Gilbert Grape (lots of people didn't even know it was him, or a non mentally impaired actor) - I just thought "wow- now THAT is acting!"
Of course, the movie it self was moving in it's own right and I highly recommend it...

vanessa915 Wrote:I actually watched a Lifetime movie over the weekend. I don't usually get sucked into them, or even bother to give them a chance, but I was flipping through and saw Steve Zahn, so I stopped for a minute. Well, that's all it took...It was called "Speak" and is about a teenage girl who gets raped at a party, so she calls the cops. Everyone freaks when the cops show up, so she freaks out too and decides not to tell anyone. All of her friends basically shun her and she becomes an outcast at school. (People squeal at her as she walks down the hall, etc.) She withdraws into herself and her art, and barely speaks to anyone.

I know it sounds really cliche, but it was surprisingly good. The girl who plays the victim (Kristin Stewart) gave a really great performance. I have to admit I was impressed.

I'd seen this movie before and it moved me like nothing has in a while. It actually made me cry.

My movie picks for this past weekend included-
Jurrassic Park (on TNT)
Deep Impact
Failure to Launch
My House in Umbria (which was fabulous! I think it was on HBO and Maggie Smith was in it.)
DH got Glory Road last night.
Based off the true story of the 1966 Western Texas University team that won the NCAA championship. The coach was the first to play majority of black players at that level. And in the national championship he played only his black players.
Very good story and well acted.

And because I love the bonus features on DVDs, I also played the interviews with the players after the movie was made. Granted they are all in their late 50's early 60's, but some of the stories from that time still moved them. It looked like they tried to interview all the players and the coach, and even Pat Riley (who was on the losing Kentucky team that year)

I am not usually a big fan of sports movies, but this one was a good one. (So was Pride, which we watched several months ago.)

We have Netflix as well and saw Good Luck Chuck and we bothed laughed out loud. So stupid it was funny. Was a welcome relief after the serious movies we have been watching, ie ThereWill Be Blood. Also saw Chronicles of Narnia which wasn't too bad either. Special effects really good.

Someone commented on Grindhouse. LOVED IT!!! I was the only one in my group that liked the 2nd one with all the women. lol.
Last night I watched my next Netflix movie, After Midnight. It was a bit cheesy (late 80's horror flick) about a college professor whose class "The Psychology of Fear" gets canned and he offers to hold the class at his home. It winds up being a bunch of horror stories told by the students.

PrairieGirl

I just saw "Lust, Caution", a chinese language film directed by Ang Lee. WOW was that good! If you can't deal with subtitles, don't bother, but if you love Ang Lee, you may like this one.
