So, I've been reading over that past year or so, that blu-ray is the latest and greatest electronic item. Since they are really dropping in price, more and more people are buying them now.

We do not own a blu-ray player, but we need a new dvd player and with all of this talk that blu-ray is so much better, I am wondering if I should spend a bit more and get one or just go ahead and purchase an old-fashioned dvd player, lol! Regular dvd players are really, really cheap now.

Do you own one? If not, will you get one? Why or why not?
Yes, we got one a couple of months ago and it rules. The quality can't be beat, and the coolest thing is we can watch YouTube videos on the TV through it, and we can also watch streaming movies from Netflix, so that's awesome. Unfortunately, not every movie I want to see on Netflix is available for live streaming, but hopefully that will change. It's totally worth it to get a Blu-Ray player because it's all going in that direction anyway.
Someone I know has a Sony Playstation 3 which functions as a game console, a blue-ray player and an internet computer tool with a hard-drive.
He really really likes it.
If I were ever to get one, I would mainly want it for the latter two functions, as my friend does.
Consider this another blu-ray option.

Can you play non-Blue Ray movies on it? Because until that happens, I'm NOT abandoning the gazillion DVDs I already have. I hate it when they fuck with the format, and you end up having to buy everything again. UGH!
PG - we have the PS3 / Blu Ray player and yes, you can play regular DVD's on it. I would assume the same would be true for a standard Blu Ray player but if you're not sure, your best bet is to ask someone at the electronics store.
All Blu- Ray players play both regular DVD's and Blu-Ray.

My friend uses it as a multi-media device to cruise the internet on TV and he downloads movies and tv and stores them on the hard drive.

We pretty much stopped buying DVD's and watch what we download.

Ditto. The RIAA and the MPAA wonder why people pirate. Well part of it is the ever changing formats, especially when they are incompatible. I got out of that arms race years ago.
No blue-ray here. How much do they cost? I just got a new DVD player but got it from Tiger Direct for like $70. Our TV is only one one or two nights a week tops so it's hard to justify a big expense on TV-related things.

They're not incompatible, Blu-Ray plays both.
I have a PS3 as well, mainly for the blu-ray player, but also for gaming on occasion. Blu-ray is truly a great upgrade, but keep in mind, you wont really notice a big difference if you only have a standard definition television. to truly get the best picture, you have to also have a hi-def TV. Most TVs now days are hi-def, but if you still have an older set that is standard def, you wont notice a difference. the other nice feature of blu-ray is they can fit a TON more data on a single disc. they can put a lot more extra content on the disc instead of just fitting the movie on there.

My Sentiments Exactly P.G
I still have scads of VCR Tapes that are collecting dust, LOL
So till they make a blu-ray machine that will take old DVD's I will stick to what I got.

a few others have stated it, but in case you missed it, Blu-ray players are already backwards compatible with regular DVDs. if you get a blu-ray player, it will play all your current movies. you wont have to upgrade them. which is great for me, i have a ton of DVDs that i would have no reason to upgrade to blu-ray. i dont need to see The Funny Farm, or Three Amigos, or Mr. Deeds etc in Hi Def. those movies arnt so much about the visuals. Movies like the Matrix, or Lord of the Rings, etc, those movies id be interested in getting in the blu-ray format.

Cool Joe Thanks for the info.. But, I really wish I understood what the difference actually is? Does Blue ray make things look like 3-D? or what?
I really don't understand this modern technology, Oldman LOL Smile
remember the quality difference when you went from VHS to DVD? well, this is something similar, except id say to a greater magnitude. the picture is crystal clear, everything just seems more life like, and since they can fit so much more information on one disc, they cram them full of extras that they couldnt fit on regular DVDs.
I think that the high-definition is beneficial for sports and action movies and so forth, but I have to laugh at the comment that a friend made about romances and other dramas. Apparently seeing some of our more popular stars in high-definition is not as appealing as we would hope. At least at a distance their minor imperfections (that we all have) are not blurred out.
Hmmmm, I love games, so maybe a PS3 for me?? I will have to price the blu-ray players and compare a few.

Thanks everyone for all of the information! I really appreciate it.
In my opinion, Sony is not properly marketing the PS3 as a multi-media centre.
You get an internet computer with hard drive, a game system and a blu-ray player-- all in one!

Your very welcome Beachbum, I hope you pick out a good one.
IMHO Sony & Panasonic are the 2 best names on the market.
But,of course that is mho. So Goodluck with whatever you choose to get.

Joe: THANKS for explaining the difference.. I have not had the chance to witness it yet. So I will take your word for it. Smile
yeah, if you like games, then the PS3 is DEFINITELY for you. IMO, it is the best gaming system on the market, and the added benefit of getting a built in Blu-ray as well as being able to access the internet on it, it is a great mutli-media system. also remember it can play audio CDs as well, so it can replace a few components at one time in your home theatre. the price on it is not too bad considering all that is built in to it.

TW: no problem, you know me, im a tech geek, love this stuff, rofl.
Joe, I've tried to play CD's in the PS3 but it tells me I need to download a special program. Is that correct?
