Rochester, NY - A fight outside a Rochester school between two mothers has landed one of them in the hospital, and the other in jail.
Police have charged 31-year-old Jessica Ortero in connection with a stabbing outside school 8. The school went into lockdown for a short time during the incident.
We've learned that one of the mothers had an order of protection against the other. When they came to school to drop their kids off, those orders couldn't keep them apart anymore.
Police say the verbal argument got nasty, and Ortero stabbed 23-year-old Alicia Cotto in the face and neck with a knife. During the melee, Cotto tried to disarm Ortero and caused a slash to Ortero's lower back.
Police say Ortero ran into the school for medical help, but students feared she had a gun which led to the brief lockdown.
Police say Ortero actually dumped the knife outside, and kids were never in danger, but that doesn't mean this wasn't frightening.
"There was kids around, it was obviously scary," said LaRon Singletary of the Rochester Police Department. "To make a decision to have a physical altercation, outside of a school, is a poor choice. When you decide to brandish a weapon, or use a weapon, it's incomprehensible to think one would do that with children around."
Both women were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive. Ortero is being charged with assault in the second degree and with violating an order of protection.
