This is a weird story to me.
First off I think the little guy is very brave for trying to do this and it could have gone terribly wrong. So thumbs up to the little man.
However, please check out the ages of his three siblings. (Nevermind that the kid's name is goofy.)

9-Year-Old Stops Carjacking
Boy Takes Keys From Ignition
http://www.kcci.com/news/21561438/detail.html

Police in Charleston, W.Va., said that a 9-year-old boy stopped a carjacking in order to protect his young siblings, WCHS in Charleston reported.

The boy, Malik Youngblood, was sitting in his mother's car at a convenience store, police said.

They said a man named Jonathan Martin jumped into the car and told Malik to get out as his mother tried to get his 3-year-old, 19-month-old and 4-month-old brothers out of the car.

But Malik took the keys from the ignition.

He said that he didn't want the man to take his brothers and possibly kill them or others in a crash.

Malik said he hid the keys behind his back, and Martin slammed his head against the door as he tried to get them.

Martin then ran, but he tripped. When police arrived, he said that he was guilty of trying to steal the car and apologized, court documents said.

So the mom has been pregnant for how long in the past 4 years?
This woman has a car load of little kids, leaves them in the car to go in the store, and also leaves the keys in the car and the doors unlocked. Is there something wrong with this picture? She's lucky that a more violent person didn't try to hijack the car. If I was a cop there, I'd charge her with child endangerment. But of course, no one will point the stupidity of what she did because she and the kids are suffering enough. Even without the threat of hijacking, leaving keys in the ignition along with a 4 year old can be a bad combination.

I'm not sure what story you read, but the story above clearly shows the mother did not leave them alone in the car at the time of the car jacking. The story says she was trying to get all the babies out while Malik was told to get out. There was no 4 year-old in the car. He's 9 years old so he can get out on his own, the others are not and the mother was there and in the process of getting the kids out. At the time of the hijacking there was no child endangerment by the mother going on.
Plus, the video it was definately at a gas/convience store. Running in to pay for gas or to grab a soda it would be normal (around here) to leave the multude of children in the car. A 9-yo can deal with the sibs for the 5 minutes that would last. (Though, not sure about that whole leaving keys thing.) I honestly didn't see that as an issue.
/Puttin on my geezer cap/ Back in the day. I remember being left in the open car while my folks got groceries for the week. /taking off the old geezer hat.
Aside from loving the kid's first name (the Yuugiou fan in me smiled), I think what he did was awesome. He wasn't only concerned for his siblings, but for the welfare of other people on the road, which is something a lot of adults don't think about these days. The mom must be doing a pretty good job raising them.

And she was running into a convenience store. You're in there for two or three minutes. I see nothing wrong with leaving your kids in the car for that amount of time. At least I don't have to worry about them running into me when I'm on a coffee run!
I don't understand the type of person who leaves a running car with keys in the ignition. I mean yes I understand it's only a minute but it doesn't take a minute to jump inside and take off at full speed.

Yeah, I don't get that, either. Hell, I live in a pretty crime-free area, and even I won't do that. Lots of people do, though. I guess it's more because my father's a locksmith, so he's constantly rescuing people who are locked outside their running vehicles. XD

The mother hadn't left, she was right there. There was no mention the car was running.
