Thai restaurant near Salem bans kids under age six

Young kids banned at restaurant SILVERTON, Ore. -- The Red Thai Room offers fine cuisine, fresh ingredients, and finely appointed outdoor seating. But the Silverton, Oregon establishment has a new policy you might need to know about -- kids younger than six aren’t allowed.

Owner Craig Geraud said it’s something he had to do. “I don’t feel comfortable doing it, but I have to.”

Some of his patrons used to bring in children. Many parents watched their kids, and made sure they were well behaved. But some others didn’t watch as closely.

According to Geraud, “many others didn’t pay attention or don’t care.”

And then something happened that broke the camel’s back.

“You’re trying to entertain some customers that want more of a fine dining experience, and have a glass of wine -- and lo and behold, Cheerios come flying across the room and into your glass.”

Geraud said it happened at his restaurant. He said he had to do something for his customers, and the new policy is it.

“I’ve never had Cheerios in my wine, and I don’t think I’d like it here,” customer John Watson said.

He says he understands the new policy.

“Somebody comes to a nice restaurant like this, you want a little peace and quiet,” said Watson.

Another patron, Mark Johnston, said he sees both sides.

“I'm sure there are people that won't go there because of [the new policy], but by the same token, he'll have other people that will keep going there or go there more because people like me with kids aren't there bugging him,” said Johnston.

In the end, Geraud says it's pretty simple.

“Kids need to be well-mannered and behaved before they have a chance to go to a restaurant,” said Geraud.
