He is trying to get the court to decide he is insane so his sentence will be lighter.
Um......the guy is not insane, he's a FREAKIN' IDIOT! Mister, if the sun explodes, being in an underground bunker won't help you, as the Earth will no longer exist. Sun explosions (also called "novas" or "supernovas") take everything in the vicinity with them. The good news is, if the sun explodes, we won't have long to panic about it, before we are all just so much stellar dust.
