I am wondering if anyone here has had a rabbit as a pet. I looked at the House RAbbit Society website and there are a lot of bunnies who need homes. I have always had cats and rats as pets before. DH likes the idea of rabbits since they 're
vegetarians(he is a vegan).
I have a friend who finds them absolutely perfect, and she adopts and fosters. As long as you're sure you have no allergies, I would definitely say go for it.
I used to have one, and I have to say that it was more work than a cat. If you are getting one from a Rabbit Rescue society then you can probably specify that you want one that is friendly and cuddly, and ideally you can get one that is litter-trained. It's great... you can let the rabbit roam around your place and not worry about them.
MY SIL had a pet Rabbit by the name of "Easter" lol this was years ago.. Anyway it was a great rabbit, but sadly their dog did not think so and despite efforts of keeping Sadie away from Easter it did not work, and Easter became puppy chow, lol
So, if you plan on having any rabbits in your home, make sure you have no dogs around or even neighborhood dogs too.
Cause my SIL swears it was a neighbor dog that got Easter & not Sadie, lol
But Sadie never denyed it, LOL
Just kidding of course. In reality we never found out which dog did the deed. But its suffice to know Dogs, and rabbits cannot co-habitate.
My college roommate had a rabbit named Lucy. She was litterbox trained, and wasn't a problem at all. Quiet, didn't jump up on things, didn't smell. I think that if you don't have any dogs or cats, a bunny or 2 would be good.
Just remember to keep in mind that Bunnies are not affectionate creatures at all. Yes you can kiss them but they won't kiss back, lol So, if your looking for any sort of love from a pet, I am afraid a bunny falls short.
BUT if your just looking for something to chat with, lol
Then go for it & good luck.

Apparently some bunnies are quite affectionate. Ours used to hop onto us and would enjoy our company. Who knows, he may have just enjoyed our body heat but either way he did enjoy being with us and we liked him too. He wasn't litter-box trained so he spent a lot of time caged up (we got him from someone who couldn't keep him, so his alternatives were limited) although we played with him daily, still I did wish for his sake that he could have had more freedom.
I'd agree with sharon_g about getting multiple rabbits but be careful about genders... apparently they have quite a reputation for liking to make little bunnies

My fiance got me a rabbit the end of April, our dating anniversary, because I've always wanted one. I took Veterinary Technology, and had been volunteering at a pet store so I thought I was ready. House Rabbit Society's website is AWESOME, very helpful.
Benny is a Mini Rex, he has a large cage, he's in his cage at night and if no one's home. He has his own bedroom in the apartment of rabbit safe items, and was allowed to freely hop with the door shut until we recently discovered he chewed up wood (doors, along the bottom of the walls). I'm sure it can be easily patched up. I like to supervise him now.
Jeremy adopted a cat a month ago from SPCA, he was terrified of the bunny at first, but likes him now!! Benny's getting neutered this week, he was at the vet Friday and is very healthy.
We use Boxo for the cage-it's like a recycled cardboard bedding and fluffy. It absorbs odors, and is healthier than using wood based shavings (can cause liver problems) because of the oils.
He likes to eat Oxbow Orchard Grass-important to get a lot of hay to file their teeth.
Paris - how funny that your cat was afraid of the bunny! That sounds so cute!

my grandmother had rabbits but they lived outside in hutches. I know they can be skittish.
In other news, I gave away some cat litter to a couple who fosters cats. They have a brother-sister duo, 2 years old, who need a home. I said that after we move, we may want to adopt these two.
We always supervise them-just in case.
That picture is ADORABLE! I love it!
Thank you!!
That was only a few days after they first met. Seamus is the cat, and Benny is the rabbit.
