1. When your cheese gets moldy, do you cut off the mold and keep eating or do you throw it away?
Cut it off. It's still good! And it's a sin to waste cheese....

2. Do you follow expiration dates or do you follow your senses?

Probably once a week, sometimes twice.

5. Do you own a chest freezer?
I own one of those upright ones that looks just like a refrigerator. There have been times when it has been "slap-full" as they say down here in the South. People give us stuff -- mess of catfish, mess of breem, mess of striped bass.....

6. Open your pantry and pick three items to make a meal - no cheating. Items must be from your pantry. Kraft Dinner does not count.
Penne, white wine, tarragon (top with parmesan and steamed asparagus for a fresh pasta salad)

We eat cheese so fast it doesn't get a chance to be moldy.

1. When your cheese gets moldy, do you cut off the mold and keep eating or do you throw it away?

If it's hard cheese, you can cut the mold off and if the rest of it still tastes okay, then I'll keep it. If it's soft cheese, then the mold spores have spread throughout already even if you can't see it, so I'll toss it.

2. Do you follow expiration dates or do you follow your senses?

Depends on the item. I'll keep yogurt up to a week past the date depending on how it tastes.

Surfside Sushi in Pacific Beach in San Diego.

We don't exactly have a pantry, kitchen's too small. But we mostly eat fruit and veggies, so our meal items are in the fridge/freezer.

1. When your cheese gets moldy, do you cut off the mold and keep eating or do you throw it away?
I'm with anastasia on this - hard cheese, just cut it off - but soft cheese throw it away. I mostly consume hard cheese.

2. Do you follow expiration dates or do you follow your senses?
I check them religiously since some of my food comes from food pantries and they are notorious for getting old food. A lot depends on if the item is perishable or just dry or canned goods.

The Chinese buffet down the street. But do not go there often.

Usually lunch once a week with a friend who is in town only that day.

My dad had one and I'm sorry now that I got rid of it when he passed. Finding room for one, even his small one which took up no more floor space than a small refrigerator, is tough in a mobile home.

6. Open your pantry and pick three items to make a meal - no cheating. Items must be from your pantry. Kraft Dinner does not count.
1 can diced tomatoes, 1 can black beans, 1 can potatoes = black bean soup (with a little onion, corn and bullion cubes added).
1. When your cheese gets moldy, do you cut off the mold and keep eating or do you throw it away?

I do now because DH makes me. In the old days I would have thrown the whole thing out.

2. Do you follow expiration dates or do you follow your senses?

A little of both. If it's a recent expiration I will smell it and use my judgment. If it's been expired for a while, out it goes. It also depends on the type of product. Milk, dairy or veggies I would toss. Dried food, spices, pills...I'd probably take a chance.

3. What's your favourite restaurant?

I have too many to list here.

4. How often do you eat out?

Two or 3 times a week.

5. Do you own a chest freezer?

No. I like for my chest to be warm. Oh...is that one of those big freezers that is shaped like a trunk? No, I don't.

6. Open your pantry and pick three items to make a meal - no cheating. Items must be from your pantry. Kraft Dinner does not count.

Do I have to do that right now? I really don't have the time or motivation. Besides, I don't have a pantry. I have a refrigerator and a cabinet where I keep food. So I guess I can't do this anyway.

Don't have a specific pantry, it's spread around the kitchen cabinets. But I could probably whip up a bean salad (garbanzos, pintos, black beans and some vinaigrette)

1. When your cheese gets moldy, do you cut off the mold and keep eating or do you throw it away?
Depends on the cheese and how much is left. If there is just a little bit left or it is a soft cheese. It gets tossed. A good sharp Cheddar? Trimmed and eaten.

Normally the expiration date. However, milk and deli meats is usually smell.

3. What's your favourite restaurant?
what day of the week is it? Woody's Smokestake, El Chisme, J Benjamins, La Mie for breakfast ...

Couscous mix, chicken broth, and artichoke hearts.
(I think it is couscous, it may be a quinoa mix.)
Chill and if I can add diced fresh tomatoes and leftover grilled chicken, it would probably make a decent entree salad.
1. When your cheese gets moldy, do you cut off the mold and keep eating or do you throw it away?

Usually I just look and sniff. If all seems well, then I eat it. Even with eggs I usually will eat them a week or so after the date. I'm still alive.

3. What's your favourite restaurant?
I love The Keg and Canyon Creek but my favourite is Spencer's at the Waterfront here in Burlington. They have a great lunch and an awesome dinner menu. The patio is right on the water. It's amazing.

6. Open your pantry and pick three items to make a meal - no cheating. Items must be from your pantry. Kraft Dinner does not count.
Pasta, diced tomatoes, oregano. Any day of the week! Yummy.
1. When your cheese gets moldy, do you cut off the mold and keep eating or do you throw it away?
Depends upon the cheese. Softer ones are never left that long (if they were then they would be thrown out), and harder ones are trimmed and promptly made into a cheese sandwich (in an attempt to mitigate any problems that the mold might bring)

2. Do you follow expiration dates or do you follow your senses?
Again it depends upon the item and the consequences. Meats are thrown out as soon as the date hits (very rare), most other items I use my senses, and eggs are used up to a month after their expiration date

3. What's your favourite restaurant?
My most-frequented location is the Vietnemese place down the street. A big bowl of 'noodles' (also includes veggies and meat) is $10 with tax and tip. It's not just cheap... the food is so yummy!

4. How often do you eat out?
Once a month maybe? Not often.

5. Do you own a chest freezer?
Nope.

6. Open your pantry and pick three items to make a meal - no cheating. Items must be from your pantry. Kraft Dinner does not count.
I don't have much in my pantry that isn't 'emergency supplies'. I live close to the grocery store so I usually visit there every few days and only pick up fresh meats, vegetables, fruits, and other necessary items. I do have rice, baking supplies, and teas in my cupboard that I use on a regular basis but never as their own meal! If I had to survive for a week from my 'pantry' there would be a lot of soup, alphagetti, and tuna for the cat.
catsnotkids Wrote:4. How often do you eat out? 2-3 times per YEAR. For me, eating out is a huge waste of money.

For me, buying groceries is a huge waste of money. There are 4 of us in the home who have completely different taste buds and most of us are too lazy/tired to cook. So a lot of stuff ends up getting thrown out. I just threw out a huge bowl of pasta with sausage the other day. I thought we could eat off it for a few days, but DH didn't like the pasta sauce and SD didn't like the sausage. Sigh...
CFS - that sucks!!

We don't even eat out when we go on vacation or to a music festival. We bring our own food and either cook at our campsite or get a hotel with a microwave and/or kitchen. I'm pretty devoted to not eating out.

I cut off the mold, unless it is totally furry. If bread gets mold though, it's goodbye.

2. Do you follow expiration dates or do you follow your senses?
I keep an eye on the dates, but use my sniffer. If milk says it has a week left, but it's stank, it's gone.

3. What's your favourite restaurant?
Probably Rose's Restaurant or Cooper Mountain (both local). I still dream about the Saltgrass in Houston, *drool*

5. Do you own a chest freezer?
That would be so awesome! Maybe one of those small ones. I make my own jam, and I would love to be able to make a year's worth and store it. No room in this apartment, though.

6. Open your pantry and pick three items to make a meal - no cheating. Items must be from your pantry. Kraft Dinner does not count.
I'm too lazy to physically go in the kitchen and look, but I am sure I could make a nice salad from garbanzos, dressing, and croutons. Oh, and lettuce from the fridge, of course. I guess I am a cheater.
Paloma - you don't can your jam? It's really easy - just buy the pectin and follow the instructions in the box. Smile
