Ah....not a noble Irish king, but a fish's appendage.
"Finn is a character on Law and Order SVU."
I hate to say it, but this may be the source of the name. I remember reading that the two main sources for children's names are historical (name was in the family) and from TV shows or similar 'entertainment' sources. If you wonder why a name is suddenly so popular then it's probably because it was a character's name on a TV show. Sad to say.
My favourite girl name is Meadow!
I like a lot of girl names, but not too many boy names.
Finn was the veterinarian on Grey's Anatomy as well.
Ava was one of the top baby names after a Grey's Anatomy character, my cousin named her daughter Ava during this craze (she just turned a year old).

Really? For some odd reason I had the idea it meant "son of Maud." Not that it's any improvement.
I stand corrected:

It still sucks as a girl's name though. A girl can't be the son of anyone.
You know what, CFS? I actually found a site where it said BOTH. I forget where, but it was recent.
This reminds me of a woman where I temped one time. She was pregnant, knew it was a girl, and had selected the name "McKenzie," which, she correctly informed us, means 'son of a wise chief."
And I said. "Wait. You're going to name your daughter 'son'?"
Boy was she pissed. All I did was confirm what she had just told us. "Kenzie" would have been far more appropriate.

My fiance's cousin has a daughter named McKenzie. My mom was going to name me McKenzie if I were male. I asked why, and it's my grandfather's middle name, so at least it had some sort of meaning... Anyway, speaking of my fiance's cousins. He has another with "Austin Texas" as his son's name and "Phoenix Arizona" as the girl's name. ugh!
Your fiance's cousin hates his kids, doesn't he?
eslbee Wrote:Your fiance's cousin hates his kids, doesn't he?
I'm really wondering that.

I agree. That's why I found it wierd for girls to have son in their name.
I had to bump this thread as I just found out yesterday that my 2nd cousin, (daughter to my only close first cousin) gave birth to her first son yesterday.
( they have 2 daughters, as if that was not good enough for them, but that whole son, daughter thing is another rant for another time, lol)
Anyway they name this poor kid.
Asher Allen Tayler. Come on ASHER?? REALLY WTF!!!
You know damn well as a kid growing up, and we know kids can be cruel they will call him ASS for short. They won't even bother prounounsing the H for ASH for short. Which is just as bad. But, no his nick name in school will be Ass. You can count on that.
If this kid ever grows a brain, he will ask his parents if he could use his middle name. At least Allen is a decent name.
Why they could not name him Allen Asher I will never know!
But, hey they are only cousins, so I have nothing in on it.
And the only reason I know period, is cause my First Cousin, to who I am sort of close to. ( he came to my mothers funeral) Is tickled PINK to finally have a GRANDSON for the First time. So he had to spread the news to everyone.
So, I was wondering if ASHER is a Popular name? Or what?
ALSO While I am on the subject of baby names.
My Nephew got a girl knocked up out of wedlock and Now I am a GREAT aunt for the 8th time to a baby boy born 5-14
His name is ZANE Paul.
OMG WTF What is wrong with People?
Well at leat it is a shorter name. And not as bad as Asher is.
But ZANE?? WTF is wrong with Parents these days.
What happened to good old strong masucline names like Michael, or Christopher, or Robert. No I get Zane & Asher.
UGH, Well if these names are popular that is news to me.
I was looking for a bad baby name thread!
There is a lady I know from a forum who named her kid Archer Lincoln. Yuck! UM OK.
Is Finn popular now cause of that Glee show?
Asher huh, I hear that one a bit more than I care too, so yeah it may be in rotation soon.

That's a good name for a fish, particularily a shark.
If you think those names are wierd or out of the ordinary, you should see the names I sometimes see around where I am. There are a lot of immigrants from the middle east (talking about middle eastern part of the world, not middle eastern states). Some of the names seem to be 10-15 characters long and I wouldn't even begin to guess the pronounciation. There seems to be a lot of Mohammed's (not sure of spelling). I guess that's there version of John or Jim. I don't know what the common female name would be.
I think bastardized spellings of baby names is mostly a North American trend. Everybody wants their kid to stand out from the rest of the kids, and by giving them a stupid cartoon-like name is one way to do it. In other cultures, names are based on keeping certain names in the family tree.
1. I don't think "Asher" is really that bad a name.
2. At least the parents gave him a reasonable middle name, so he can go by Allen if he chooses to.
What gets on my nerves--besides the super-trendy names--is people who give their kids ethnic names, like "Shanti," when in fact they have no connection to said culture and probably no idea what the name means.
Jen M.
There's a rapper named Asher Roth or something around right now. He sings a semi popular song about getting drunk in college.
Isn't Asher the name of a tribe in Israel? So if it is, it's a son of Isaac, like Reuben or Benjamin or Joseph, and not all that odd.
Actually When I think Of Finn I thnk Of Ice T's Charactor Det. Odafin "Fin" Tutuola On L&O SVU

I love him
But speaking of crazy baby names. My nephew Carl named his new son Zane. Well that name is a new one on me.
What happened to good old strong male names like Michael or Robert, or Christopher? No I get names like Zane & Kyle & Logan
Real sissy names imho of course.
And speaking of Maddison I have one great niece named
Addyson. That is sort of close, lol her twin sister's name is
Mackenzie. So if you take the M from her name and add it to
Addyson you got Maddyson. Only spelled with a Y just to be difficult.

They just need to name the next boy Munch and everything's ok.
