The other day I was on the net reading about "What Are They Doing Now". Some of them were entertainers that were big back in the 70s.
They had pictures of them from that time to now.

They were so good looking back then (in the 70s) and now they look just awful. I wonder if I had two photos of myself from back then to now, would I look the same way? One time I came across a woman I used to know from 25 years ago. She saw me and knew who I was right away. She then said that I have not changed in my looks since the last time she saw me. That was nice to hear.

Here's the question: is it because these entertainers got so bad looking now because of age or is it because of abuse of drugs and alcohol (or other things)? It's not just well-known people I'm asking about, but others as well.
I think it could be because, when people are in the spotlight on the net, magazines, TV, etc.... people are done up with make-up, pro-lighting, or even airbrushed.... maybe the "now" photos didn't have that finesse. I've seen some "beautiful" stars without make-up and WOW they are very different, but also like us "regular" folks look when we get out of bed or something. I think that is a big part of it.

I do think it could be because of how they lived, too. Both those factors have to make for um, not so good looking present day stars?

I think that I look OK in comparison to 10 years ago except my weight has gone up. Otherwise, I suppose I'll look again when I'm 40 and we'll see hehe.
I think they do terrible things to themselves and that ages them tremendously, and then, as Dana said, they are now minus all the props and help they used to have.
Yeah I saw photos of Pam Anderson and Cameron Diaz without make-up. WOW they look like totally different people!
I agree that it's a combination of photo editing, makeup, and professionals always maintaining the celebrities' appearance. And when they don't have that, they actually look like "normal" people.

I believe fully that hard living ages you prematurely. I have seen people who have abused both drugs and alcohol lose their looks and age years before their time. It's really sad.
I think the lifestyle has a lot to do with it. It's not just drugs and alcohol but the general stress of being on display all the time, lots of travel, and the sheer stress of being a performer. Of course they also have a small army of stylists who make them look good which doesn't hurt.
I think it's lifestyle combined with genetics. My sister and I come from a family that does not go prematurely grey nor is prone to wrinkles. I smoked for 14 years, though, and I have many more wrinkles than my older sister.

Some people are genetically predisposed to looking old, gaining weight, sagging, what have you, while some are not. I also think that it's VERY VERY normal to look 55 when you are 55, and the fact that in Hollyweird so many 55 years olds have been plastic surgeried all to the nines, it makes those who aged naturally look unnaturally old.... when really, it's quite the other way around.

Jo -- that's a very good point. I started going gray at 19, and now at 41, I"m almost 100 % gray (but I color). My skin, however, is pretty amazing, although this summer I started getting a rough spot on the bridge of my nose -- need to exfoliate more!

But I'm very fair skinned, and we definitely have a greater disposition to wrinkling easier and earlier. I stay out of the sun, which gives me an advantage.
