What do you mean about exploring abandoned buildings? That sounds interesting. Like urban spelunking or something.

I got into abandoned buildings and photograph them or just absorb the atmosphere. I love it and it's a very peaceful thing for me. I like to imagine what it was like in its heyday and what people did there every day. I like finding little trinkets that have been left there that give a window into the lives of the former owners (I never take any home with me - I leave them there so others can see them, too). It's a lot of fun, but as you've seen, it's not the safest activity out there, so it's not something to be done lightly.
As long as you're safety conscious, it's probably a lot safer than a lot of other things I can think of.

How does it happen that they aren't locked up or fenced off or whatever?
Honestly, they are abandoned which means the person who was supposed to lock it up didn't bother, or more likely the elements or people demolished the entrances. Despite what people think, a building isn't really secure. Just a few decades even without vandals to help the process makes a building easily accessible.
Sounds like _Life After People_!
I have also gone into a few abandoned buildings.
One needs to use some common sense, but the experience was very interesting.
Some great beauty and history is left to the elements for various reasons.
