I guess I should update this. Unbeknownst to me, academic and free-lancer were living in a trailer that was so small, the dining room was free-lancer's office. Academic had put nearly everything she owned in storage and had no place to work or keep items essential to her job. She simply had no space, no time and no privacy and this was of no concern to free-lancer. I further suspect with academic movin' on up a career ladder, free-spirit may have felt there was no place for someone with a different form of education. I have seen that one happen many times. One gets a whopping promotion, but has to move, the other refuses to join her.
