Gosh Darn Eddy I am so sorry for being so late to this thread.
OMG that had to be as scary as hell. Hug
I am so sorry you went through all of that..
BUT the good news is your alive and well.
As for your medical bill? Well, I am sure you can work some sort of payment arrangement with the hospital. In this day and age of everybody skipping out on their bills for one reason or another I am sure if you sit down with someone and speak man to man with them and work out some sort of monetary agreement. They might appreciate your honesty and forethought to it. And they just might agree to it.
If not.........fuck em...... LOL
Goodluck and I am glad your all better Hug
Gee, if this happened to me I don't think I would have called it an incident. I call it an all out emergency surgery. I thought you were going to say you were coughing up blood and had an ulcer or something. Ruptured artery?!! That sounds so scary. I hope you are recovering OK.

I didn't have insurance this past year and the hospital and medical group were very nice in setting up a payment plan for me. I am sure they will do even better for you.
I am glad you are okay, Eddy. Take care of yourself.
Anastasia, the artery was in my esophagus which of course drains into the stomach.

I'm going to see if I can work something out. I know that a lot of expenses that hospitals charge are because they know that insurance companies will pay for it. From another site I heard a person who had a 12 grand bill but when they sat down and talked to the people it was reduced to a thousand. I also know that as long as you make "good faith payments" meaning even a token payment once a month of just a dollar they can't do anything to you.

I'm just glad that it was fixed.
Jo Wrote:Holy crap!! Glad you made it and doubly glad you were able to perform on command when needed (throw up blood when the nurses were watching.) HA!

Scary about the freakin' insurance situation, though.

Not as scary as seeing nearly black blood clots in the ER toilet.

Oddly, this is one of the few times money doesn't scare me. When I asked the doctor what would have happened if I had chosen to ignore it she looked stunned and said I could have died. Kind of puts numbers on paper into perspective doesn't it.

DEATH!!!????!!!!! OMG Eddy I am so glad you had the brains to get help and go to an ER.
You are so right about that.. Money is nothing without your life.
So I am very happy you are still wth us Hug
I do KNOW what fear you went through.

I did that as a child.
Although mine was not an artery it was just a small blood vessel. I hemmoraged and threw up blood all over the place.
I don't remember much about it.
I was very young. But I do recall seeing blood in the toilet.
And at age 6 or 7 that can be very traumatic.
Let alone as an adult.
I am just happy your healing & Please
GET WELL SOON Hug
Dang - that sounds pretty scary (& a bit gross on the vomit part). Glad you're okay!
Oh my god, that is SCARY. I'm so glad you're okay, Eddy!

I've lost hope with hospital billing departments. I had a $600 bill taken to collections because I didn't have $600 just lying around cause I'm unemployed. So it's racking up interest on my credit card now. *grumble* I wish my medical bills would just disappear!
Glad you're ok, Eddy!
Glad you're OK Eddy. The bills will work themselves out.

So true.

When we went to the ER in December DH and I were really worried about what would be covered, how much it would cost etc. He has a really high deductible and we were getting pretty freaked out. It is illegal for medical staff to ass about your insurance status, so obviously they aren't going to go with a cheaper option if you need the more expensive one, but it's still a huge worry to go in and not know what is going to happen.

When it's a matter of life and death some debt and money worries really aren't that big of a deal. It can and will be worked out.

Don't worry about the medical bills. When I lived in NY and was uninsured, I had a huge $20K hospital bill that just disappeared after a while. It's not on my credit report either.

not to add to any worry, but medical collections can and often do show on credit reports. a lot of places over look medical collections when doing financing (we overlook them here at my credit union), but since it is considered derogatory, it does affect your credit score in a negative way, which could mean higher interest rates on loans because of a lower score.

I guess in New York they don't.

New York may have some laws in place that prevent the medical industry from placing accounts in to collections. Not sure though, or it could be the particular hospital you used didnt want to have to pay the collection fees required to try and recoop the money, and just wrote it off. either way, luckily it worked out for you that it never showed up on your credit report. i cant count the number of credit reports i have ran that are PERFECT other than a bunch of medical collections, and it ruins the persons credit score, which causes them to have a higher interest rate. sucks big time!
OMG Glad you are okay!
I'm sorry I have not been around much lately, but I am glad you are ok and planning to work things out with the hospital. I have thrown up blood and know how very scary that is. It's fortunate you were smart enough to go to the ER and get the proper diagnosis.
Eddy, glad you are still among us. Take it easy, and give them a dollar at a time.
OMG, Eddy. I'm just now seeing this, and I am so sorry. Sad I'm glad you're doing better now, but that is terrifying.

Eddy Wrote:I have been away from the board for a few days for a medical incident.

Basically on Sunday I started feeling queasy in the stomach and this continued through early Wednesday morning. I had eaten a lot of potato chips since I felt like indulging and at around 2am I threw up. I figured it's because I ate too much of something I hadn't eaten in a long time. No big deal. I noticed a red color but figured it might just be food coloring or something.

I couldn't sleep so I stayed awake and only had some ice water. About 10 am on Wednesday I threw up again and it was blood. That made me nervous but it could just be backwash from one of my nosebleeds. A couple hours later it happened again and I decided that a visit to the ER might be in my best interest.

Well, when I was in the ER I had a final episode of vomiting. It was disgusting. All clots. It was apparently impressive because the ER staff were calling each other to take a look. In a way I'm proud of this because when I get sick, it's epic sickness. Needless to say I was admitted immediately, sat around for five hours, transferred to another hospital, then intubated and operated on.

The problem was an artery decided to give up the ghost (think of a pipe that is a hundred years old with no problems then finally bursts) so they had to go in and cauterize it and clip the artery. Apparently it worked but I had to stay for two days while they observed me. God that was a long two days.

Anyway, I'm better now, but that was scary.

Oh and need I mention I'm not insured? Lovely.
Hey Eddy:

I'm dealing with my insurance company now over my surgery and as you can imagine it's a royal PITA.

I did find this in my research though: http://www.thekarisgroup.com/ it's a company that helps patients without insurance, or are under insured, to settle medical bills.
I'll have to check it out.
