So, our assignment was to illustrate the concept "The Monster Under the Bed" in a 3D format. The "Monster" could be a real monster or something that someone would dread or be afraid of (housing crisis etc). Well, what's scarier than babies?
MY Monster Under the Bed:
The figures are super-sculpy that has been fired and painted. The bed is made of sculpey (knobs), balsa, aluminum, wire and fabric (yes, I made the mattress and sheet myself.....as well as the pillows). I couldn't find fabric like what I wanted so I even painted the fabric myself.
That is so damn cool and terribly scary all at the same time! Is this for a class? If so, definitely tell us what sort of reaction you get when they see it!
HA HA OMG that is funny, scary too but damn look at that baby who wouldn't be scared of that thing? I love it and yes please let us know the reactions you get. You did a good job.
Yep, it was for a classs and of course everyone interprets it differently. Some people think of the couple as having a fling and being afraid of pregnancy, others think of it as the fear of having an abnormal child and still others consider it to be the fear of the "terrible twos". Only a very few people "get it" the way it was meant, but that's okay.....the fact that it can be interpreted in multiple ways makes it much more versatile.
That's awesome how long did it take to create?
That's fantastic! So realistic and with a potentially sensitive topic it is nice to have some flexibility built into the interpretation.
That is so great! I'd give you an A +++ !
You have amazing talent.
Wow! It's quite uncommon that someone who is really good at 2-D art is also good at 3-D, too. I remember the 3-D art majors as being very different from the 2-D majors. I can't conceptualize anything in 3-D, and yet I'm a visual artist. I had a very hard time in 3-D classes, luckily, I only had to take two. Of course, my teachers sucked ass, and our assignments were very nebulous (assignments were things like "closed," "tension," "open." And our materials were extremely limiting, like a square block of white plaster, or a kiln brick to carve. Then we had to build a tower out of balsa wood dowels that was a certain height and strong enough to support a brick. Geez, we weren't engineers, for fuck's sake. The prof never would have tolerated your submission, it's too figurative and not pointlessly nebulous enough! In other words, it's too interesting!!!!
I never heard of super-sculpey, it looks like great fun, and you're abilities to express yourself so deftly in 3-D is really freaking awesome!
Freakin' awesome!

What are the dimensions (roughly)?
omg, that is awesome! I so wished i had some sort of artistic ability like that!!!
Anastasia: Ah, this isn't for 3D Design......it's for 3D Illustration. We HAVE to come up with 3D solutions that could be photographed for print as an illustration.
The 3D design here is far better than the 3D Design I had to take tho'. It was even more pointless at my first college.
Super Sculpey is much like Sculpey except that it doesn't come in colors (it's kind of a flesh tone color) and you can sculpt in layers because you can fire it over and over. I build a base of wire and aluminum foil (so that I don't have to use much sculpey) and then get the basic form in sculpey over the top. Then I can gradually build up layers to get detail. You stick it in the oven for 15 minutes for every 1/4" of thickness (it's best that each layer is no more than 1/4") and then do the next layer.
Daria: It's about 6 or 7" high and the bed is about 5" x 8". The board it's on is a max size of 13" x 16" (it's a trapezoidal shape).
Wow. It has a pop culture vibe to it. Very different than your paintings. You are quite versatile and talented. I love how you made the baby over-sized. The obvious tonsil behind his sharp pointy teeth and his giant mouth is hilarious. I think you read my husband's mind when he thinks of babies.
I wanted to add that I wished you had a website or something that has all the beautiful art you have posted here. I wanted to show my husband your past work and it took searching through all your posts to find your paintings. But I don't want you to think I am complaining. I am just kind of thinking out loud.
Tho' talented I might be, my talent does not extend to making websites unfortunately. I sure wish it did.
HA HA HA HA! I love the fangs!
Hey, could I make it the photo on my childfree meetup group/yahoo group?

sure
I suggest that you consider selling postcards, T-shirt transfers, etc.
Many of us would buy that image, especially if combined with a pithy child-free caption.
I agree Cassia, i'd buy a shirt, or post card or even just a copy to hang on the wall!
Hmmmm.....let me look in to that.
Hey... In my mind it would be a win-win !
A small income source for you and some nice child-free stuff for us.
That's terrific! I love it. I'm glad you had positive reactions from your classmates as well.
