So, this is a U.S. issue - not Canada?

I assumed it was the CRTC that was blocking the streaming.
It is a licensing issue. Basically, Pandora is bound by the DMCA(digital millennium copyright act). It boils down to royalties paid to the people who own the music. the DMCA only applies to the U.S. and there is no similar act outside of the U.S. that Pandora can base the fees the pay off of. here is something from an employee of Pandora.com:

"The issue is about music royalties, and how they're collected when internet radio plays songs in Canada.

Delivery of Pandora is based on proper licensing from music rights holders - we have always believed strongly in honoring the guidelines as determined by the artists, labels and publishers.

In the U.S. there is a federal statute called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) that provides this license for all the music you hear on Pandora. Unfortunately, there is no equivalent license outside the U.S.

We'll let you know if and when things change!"
Arkved Wrote:i decided to give Pandora a try again, thinking maybe they had added more diverse group of bands....nope, same thing as the last time i used it. Everyone raves that they hear new bands they had never heard of before, or new songs etc. I have yet to hear a new band or even a song i havent heard before on there, and it repeats stuff way too often, and only being able to skip so many times per hour is a major pain. I wished they would get unknown bands, and match them to the genres of music, so if i put in Metallica, i would get Pantera, Slayer, Black Sabbath etc, but also get some unknown thrash metal/heavy metal bands that you would never hear on the radio because they aren't signed to a label. Lots of GREAT bands out there that have not been discovered because they don't fit perfectly in to main stream. I will stick to going to local shows and listening to local bands, at least i get a more diverse selection of music that way instead of hearing the same ole stuff over and over.
So sorry to hear that Joe. That is what makes Sirius worth the $
No commercials, No ads, and the best part is they have all the music that I want to listen to. Smile
There is a Price to be paid for everything. Free may be free but you get what you pay for,Beatnik Commercials and all Smile
I just dont get the whole idea that you hear new music, or new bands on there. Do i just listen to THAT much music? rofl, i know i am a music geek, but dang, i was so hoping to hear something new, or fresh. ah well, it has all the good standbys, can't complain about the quality of the selection, just wish there was more variety.
