no, only a few times a year.

I always leave 1 hour early and it always takes me 20-25 minutes by car
but I drive s l o w

On the train it takes 25 minutes.

Do you belong to a union? Yes - UUP - United University Professionals.
How many vacation days do you get in a year? 15/year and 15 sick days plus 12 holidays.
Do you take a lunch break? Yes, unlike everyone else I work with. We are allowed 30 minutes - if we don't take it we can leave early but I consider working 8 hours w/o a break inhumane. I walk on my lunch break in the park next to my office.
Do you "brown bag" it for lunch? Yes, always.
How long does it take you to get to work? 15 minutes. It really depends on traffic, though - it's only 3.5 miles but I go through 16 (yes - 16!) traffic lights. When school is in sesssion it takes as long as 20 minutes; around the holidays it was down to about 12 minutes.

And to answer the additional question posed - we chose our house based in part on the commute. We could have chosen to live in a nicer suburb but really wanted to be close to the city to shorten our commutes and make things easier all around.

I think a lot of people choose to work close to where they live or live close to where they work. I know I do. I could work in Toronto if I wanted to, and probably make a lot more money, but who the hell wants to commute one to one-and-a-half hours in each direction???

I have always hated long commutes, but when I moved to this Houston suburb (where DH was already living) I didn't have much choice. There are no jobs doing what I do in our area. I could probably work in an office as a secretary or clerk and make less than 1/2 of what I make in the city. So I guess it's a trade-off. I hate the commute but I would hate being broke too, LOL.

ETA: DH has a 30 min. commute.
Do you belong to a union?
No.
Though I wish that DH's hospital workers would unionize sometimes.

How many vacation days do you get in a year?
I think I am up to about 3 weeks vacation days. Not counting PTO/sick days.

Do you take a lunch break?
Normally, yes.

Do you "brown bag" it for lunch?
Normally yes.

How long does it take you to get to work?
In normal driving conditions, about 15-18 minutes.
I'm also in awe of the vacation time some of you get! Astounding....

The best plans I ever had were 8 hours of PTO (vacation/sick) per pay period and that was a huge luxury. Of course in those jobs I could rarely call in for a full day unless I was really, really sick as I had too much work.....
How the hell do you people get so many vacation days?
ROFL, well mine sounds better than it is, i get 20 PTO days, but half of that is eaten up with federal holidays. so i basically have 2 weeks paid off to use for everything from sick leave/vacation/dr appointment/anything else and 5 of those days HAS to be used as time off all in a row, cant spread it out over the year, its mandatory to take 1 week off. they do that so that if there is any "funny business" happening, normally after about a week, it would pop up and if you arnt there to cover it, someone else would find it. So i basically have to take a week vacation even if i dont want to, and that leaves me with 5 days to use for my birthday, sick leave, drs, etc etc etc.
I work for the state and we have an excellent union. Union jobs are the way to go.
Our company is peusdo-government. Plus I have been here 12 years so most of it is seniority. (And I am still considered a "newbie" by about a third of the staff. We have people who have been here for 25-30 years.)
