Wow Hanukkah is here, and it is time to lite my candles.
Does anyone lite them anymore these days?
What with all the horror stories you see on the news about peoples homes burning down to the ground due to an unattended Menorah
I was wondering if any of my fellow Jews here still Light the candles?
Well anyway, if you do or if you don't, its ok.... I just wanted to wish all my fellow observers of the Jewish Faith a very
HEALTHY HAPPY HANUKKAH
Happy Hannukkah to you too! I finally bought a menorah this year, but I couldn't find candles anywhere in this goy town, so I am going to have to use birthday candles.
Even after I rejected religion I still used to light the menorah candles for years, just because I thought it was kind of neat. Now I don't bother, and I didn't even know it was Chanukah until you said so.

LOL @ goy town. Thank you CFS I too feel your frustration.
I live on the west side of town which is not known for any sort of Jewish culture at all. So when opportunity struck last year when I found some candles I bought up all they had.
I am on my last box for 2008
Thanks again
Edit: Hi Anastasia, I am not lighting the candles as in any sort of religious act.
I just LOVE Candles, LOL ( see added Pix )

Yeah, I love candles, too, so that's why I kept it up for a few years, but I can't be bothered anymore, it's pointless to me.
BTW, your menorah is really pretty.
Yes, we lit with friends here in STL last night. We have an electric we use at home because DH is very sensitive to candle smoke. Houston has tons of of shuls. Look up your local JCC. They will have a gift shop that sells candles. Also if you have a Jewish area of town, you will have a "Jewish HEB" or "Jewish Kroger" that stocks items.

I'm sure the reform temple here does. I just don't go often enough to remember about the shop.
ETA: The birthday candles seem to be working out OK.

We have NOTHING like thoses stores you mentioned here dune67
BUT I did find some sites that has them, if your willing to spend the $$ for them.
So, I think that is what I might do for next year, cause ITA with CFS it is a royal PITA to find them, lol

The stores I mentioned are grocery stores near CFScorpio's home. Any town that has a concentration of Jews will have a "Jewish grocery store" that has special sections to serve that community. It's not a strictly kosher/Jewish market, but it will have more kosher items than normal and usually will have in holiday items for the most celebrated days (Chanukah, Passover, Rosh Hashana).
HAPPY HANUKKAH!!!
We light candles at out home. (I got a box of 40 for a buck......lol)
It's weird though. All of the Xmas junk was on sale at many of the stores, but all of the Hanukkah items were still regular price.
Your menorah is really cute TW!
(I'll post a pic of mine a little bit later.)
I live in one of the largest Jewish communities in the US. There is a parade of cars with menorahs that travels on the first day which is really cool.

That's just it dune67 I do NOT live in a town that has any concentration of Jews around. If I need anything for the holidays, I have to travel for it. But, the hard part is remembering to go when I do get to the east side of town where there IS a concentration of Jews there.
Beachbum: I would love to see your Menorah that would be cool.
Eddy: a Hanukkah Parade?? Now that is a new one on me..
I would LOVE to see that in my town, but that will never happen,
(sigh)
It's pretty cool to see all these cars owned by private citizens with menorahs on top all driving in a line and it's over a hundred or so.

You'd probably have better luck in Meyerland than where you are. I'm not sure of another part of town that could be considered the "Jewish part".
Happy Hanukkah!

Pretty Cool? That is an understatement.. That sounds awesome to me. I would LOVE to see something like that here in our town.
Over Here, Hanukkah is just a word! (sigh)
Pretty hard for me to overcome a triple minority.
