DH has a pirate shirt that is made out of cotton or muslin or something. It has lace-up leather/suede ties on the sleeves and collar. Is there any way I can wash this shirt without removing the ties, or will it ruin the leather? I was going to just take the ties off, but DH is afraid that we won't be able to get them back on because he already cut them back a lot and they may not fit again. (?)

Anyone have any suggestions?

A professional dry cleaner might be able to wash them together. But yeah, to wash them at home, you need to remove the leather laces. If they won't go back in afterwards, DH will need to buy new ones.
Getting those leather ties wet will totally ruin them. Like PG says, the dry cleaners may have better luck.
Go to a place that specifically cleans leather items. The leather will be ruined in a standard washing machine.
Is is raw leather like suede or slick, finished leather? I have a sweatshirt with a leather finished pull on the zipper. I wash that sucker every winter several times and the leather has faded a little, but it is okay. Maybe if you just washed it on gentle and hung it to dry? I last worked for a dry cleaner 10 years ago, and even then the prices for leather cleaning were outrageous.
Ozarkmoon, it's raw leather, like suede.

It sounds like a dry cleaner would be my best bet. Thanks, guys!
Most fabric stores sell leather lacing by the yard.

Good to know. I hope I don't have to buy more though.
Well You do have your choices CFS
A. You can price out leather laces and see how much that will cost &
B. Take the shirt to a dry cleaner and see how much that will cost
Then see which is the easiest and cheapest way to go, lol
But, Yes, by all means PLEASE keep leather away from water, lol
I have ruined too many leather purses to know that for a fact, lol
Just thought you guys would like an update.

I took it to the dry cleaners.

And guess what?

When I picked it up, they had REMOVED ALL THE TIES!!!

I gave the clerk shit about it, but she just kind of looked at me like a dumb cow. She's not the one that cleans them anyway: they send them out.

Oh well...I learned my lesson!

And the topper: the ties were in a small paper bag, and I have already lost the bag. It was in the trunk of my car and now it's gone.

Well, isn't THAT just typical! I'm sorry about that.
